PDAM Tirta Kemuning

PDAM Tirta Kemuning, a regional-owned water utility enterprise in West Java, Indonesia, faced challenges with their traditional water distribution system. We created a digital solution using IoT technology to help them track and reduce water losses more effectively. The platform replaces manual processes with real-time monitoring tools, helping the company better manage their water network and improve service for West Java communities.

Problem

PDAM Tirta Kemuning has a problem where customer readings often differ each month. This difference is caused by manual recording of customer meter data. Another factor that is a major problem is that there is water lost due to theft or leaking pipes in certain areas. The impacts felt are cumulative for months, resulting in Non Revenue Water or NRW.

In addition, manual services are also an obstacle for customers in making complaints when facing problems related to water services.

Research

My team and I conducted desk research to understand how much impact Non Revenue Water has on the business processes at PDAM Tirta Kemuning. In addition, we also conducted interviews to better understand the business processes that occur from raw water to water that is ready to be used by consumers.

From the data we obtained, there was an increase in the NRW ratio every year, from 2018 to 2023. The increase was also quite significant, which was 1.5% every year. This increase had a direct impact on PDAM Tirta Kemuning.

Solution

From the problems we have obtained, we propose several solutions from the big challenges that we have chosen to solve the problem, namely:

How to help PDAM Tirta Kemuning to monitor and control water distribution to reduce NRW that occurs due to leaks and reading errors at customers?

We finally made several solutions to propose, namely:

  • Overview insights dashboard

  • Device management: To manage all IoT devices

  • Water production management: To manage and monitor Raw Water production

  • Distribution Pipeline Flow monitoring: To monitor all distribution flow from Raw Water to consumer

  • Admin management: Add new admin and manage the access rol

Lesson learned

The learning during working on the PDAM project was very valuable. I learned a lot in empathizing with clients and users, understanding their business processes, delving into their problems and the challenge was how to make them believe that their problems would always have a solution.

In addition, I also learned a lot about communicating with government officials and also learned how to convey idea solutions to companies or organizations that are not very customer centric.
